The Grade XII Home Science syllabus is offered as Home Science (Theory) - HS1215 and Home Science (Practical) - PHS1215. All units in both Theory and Practical are compulsory. Together they form a 3-hour examination of 100 marks (70 for Theory and 30 for Practical).

Focus areas: early childhood development and care, family and community nutrition, money management and consumer education, clothing and apparel, along with practical activities that strengthen real-life skills.

Theory: 70 MarksPractical: 30 MarksAll theory and practical units are compulsory.

Instructions: The Home Science syllabus is divided into four theory units and four practical units. Separate marks are given with each unit, as shown in the summary table below, followed by detailed unit-wise content.

Unit 1 - Know Little Children (0-3 years) (18 Marks)

18 Marks
  • Characteristics of early childhood: physical growth (height, weight, body proportions), major motor milestones from birth to three years, social and emotional development (expression of emotions, socialisation) and early cognitive and language development.
  • Protection from preventable diseases: idea of immunity, natural and acquired immunity, role of breastfeeding, immunisation chart for 0-3 years and general awareness of symptoms, prevention, after-care and incubation period of common childhood diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, cholera, diarrhoea and chicken pox.
  • Special needs of disadvantaged and disabled children: socially disadvantaged children and children with physical challenges (blind, partially sighted, deaf, affected or missing limb) - basic characteristics and care needs.
  • Substitute care of young children at home and outside: role of siblings, grandparents, neighbours, crèche and day care centres in supporting parents.
  • Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS): broad objectives and main functions of the programme for early childhood care and development.

Unit 2 - Nutrition for Self, Family and Community (18 Marks)

18 Marks
  • Meal planning for the family: meaning and importance of planned meals, principles of meal planning and factors (age, activity, health, income, food habits, availability, seasons) that affect planning.
  • Planning meals for specific members: infants, school-going children, adolescents, pregnant women and lactating mothers while keeping the family’s overall needs in mind.
  • Safe drinking water and food handling: importance of potable water for good health, qualities of safe drinking water and simple household methods such as boiling, filtering, use of alum, chlorine and chlorine tablets; basic hygiene practices for food handlers.
  • Food adulteration and consumer safety: concept as given by FSSAI, common adulterants in cereals, pulses, milk and milk products, fats and oils, sugar and jaggery, honey, spices and condiments; ill effects of certain adulterants such as kesari dal, metanil yellow and argemone seeds.
  • Nutrition education for the community: role and preparation of ORS and simple nutrition education for family or community members suffering from fever and diarrhoea.

Unit 3 - Money Management and Consumer Education (17 Marks)

17 Marks
  • Family income: different sources of income - money income and real income (direct and indirect); reasons for supplementing family income and simple ways of doing so.
  • Household accounts: need for keeping records and simple procedures for maintaining daily, weekly and monthly household accounts.
  • Savings and investment: meaning and importance of saving, and major methods of investment such as savings accounts, fixed and recurring deposits, post office schemes (savings, recurring, monthly income scheme, National Savings Certificate, Kisan Vikas Patra, senior citizen schemes), LIC policies (whole life, mediclaim, money back), bonds, units/ULIPs, shares, chit funds, PPF and PF.
  • Choosing avenues of investment: basic criteria like risk, security, profit and tax-saving benefits.
  • Consumer protection and education: problems faced by consumers, Consumer Protection (Amendment) Act (2001) in brief, and consumer aids - labels, standardisation marks (ISI, FPO, Agmark, ECO Mark), advertisements, leaflets and the role of consumer redressal forums.

Unit 4 - My Apparel (17 Marks)

17 Marks
  • Clothing and personality: relation of clothing to personality, basic elements such as line, colour and texture, and principles of design like balance, rhythm, proportion, harmony and emphasis.
  • Factors affecting selection of clothes: personality, age, climate, occupation, figure, occasion and fashion; key points to remember while selecting and purchasing fabrics - purpose, quality, cost, season and reliability of shops.
  • Checking ready-made garments: need to examine seams, hem, plackets, fasteners, workmanship, design and drape before purchase.
  • Care of clothes: general principles and precautions in washing and maintenance of cotton, wool, silk and acrylic garments.
  • Care products and storage: basic idea of soaps and detergents, simple stain removal for common stains (tea, coffee, lipstick, ball pen/ink, grease, curry, blood) and safe storage of clothes.

Practical Unit 1 - Know Little Children (0-3 years) (05 Marks)

5 Marks

Practical activities linked to the care and understanding of very young children and arrangements for their substitute care.

Suggested Activities:

  • Prepare an interview schedule for a working mother of a 0-3 year old child.
  • Interview a working mother to find out her arrangement of substitute care for the child in her absence.
  • Visit and evaluate a crèche or day-care centre for its facilities and suggest improvements.
  • Prepare a simple immunisation chart for a child from birth to 3 years.

Practical Unit 2 - Nutrition for Self, Family and Community (10 Marks)

10 Marks

Meal planning and simple food and nutrition-related activities for the family and community.

Suggested Activities:

  • Plan meals for the family and show suitable modifications for a pregnant woman and a lactating mother; prepare and serve one appropriate dish.
  • Prepare oral rehydration solution (ORS) correctly and demonstrate its use.
  • Carry out simple household tests to check adulteration in commonly used foods such as cereals (rice, suji), pulses (chana dal), milk, tea leaves, dhania powder, haldi powder, sugar / bura / gur, black pepper (whole), mustard oil and red chillies.

Practical Unit 3 - Money Management and Consumer Education (10 Marks)

10 Marks

Hands-on practice with banking procedures and consumer awareness.

Suggested Activities:

  • Find out and report how an account is opened in a bank and in a post office; collect and fill sample forms.
  • Read and evaluate labels of any four household items that carry different standardisation marks.
  • Fill in basic bank / post office forms such as withdrawal slips and pay-in slips for cheque and cash.
  • Prepare one label each for four household items showing appropriate standardisation marks.

Practical Unit 4 - My Apparel (05 Marks)

5 Marks

Practice of basic hand stitches, fasteners and care techniques for garments.

Suggested Activities:

  • Make samples of basic hand stitches: basting (even and uneven), running stitch, back stitch, hemming and interlocking.
  • Attach fasteners such as press button, buttons and hook-and-eye on fabric samples.
  • Prepare a small patch work sample.
  • Examine the workmanship and labels of ready-made garments to assess quality.
  • Practice removal of common stains such as tea, coffee, curry, grease, ball-point ink and lipstick.
